Beyond Compare alternative for focused Excel workbook review

Looking for a free Beyond Compare alternative for Excel files? WorkbookDiff covers a narrower job: comparing stored values and formulas in two aligned XLSX versions, locally in a browser. Keep Beyond Compare when you need its broader desktop file and folder workflows.

Try the narrower browser alternative

  1. Decide whether you need workbook cell changes or a broader file/folder workflow. Keep a desktop tool for requirements WorkbookDiff does not cover.
  2. Save original and revised versions as unencrypted XLSX, at most 20 MB each. Keep sheet names and coordinates aligned.
  3. Open WorkbookDiff, choose both files, and compare. Review formula, value and hidden-content changes; export the complete free CSV.

Start with compare two Excel files, inspect formula-vs-value changes, or read the Excel diff guide. Need the Windows Office tool instead? See our Spreadsheet Compare alternative.

WorkbookDiff scope and limits

WorkbookDiff compares two unencrypted .xlsx workbooks, up to 20 MB each, by matching worksheet names and cell coordinates. It compares supported stored values, formula expressions, sheet presence/visibility, hidden rows/columns and used range. It does not recalculate formulas, compare formatting, charts, pivots or VBA, or align inserted/reordered rows.

Workbook content is processed locally in your browser; this is not a promise of zero network traffic. Comparing and exporting the full CSV are free, with no signup. The optional $19 one-time audit handoff report provides review notes and HTML / print export, not an independent audit.

Frequently asked questions

Is WorkbookDiff a free Beyond Compare alternative?

For two aligned XLSX versions, comparison and full CSV export are free without signup. WorkbookDiff does not replace Beyond Compare file/folder workflows. The optional $19 one-time handoff report is separate.

Can Beyond Compare run on a Mac?

Yes. Beyond Compare offers desktop versions for Windows, macOS and Linux. WorkbookDiff offers a browser workflow instead of requiring a desktop installation.

Can I use Beyond Compare for Excel files?

Check the vendor documentation and the table/file-format conversion settings in your installed version. Validate the Excel content exposed to comparison before assuming it covers formulas, formatting or other workbook features.

Does WorkbookDiff merge files or synchronize folders?

No. WorkbookDiff version comparison produces a change list and exports; it does not merge workbook changes or synchronize folders.

Are my workbook files uploaded for comparison?

No. Selected workbook bytes are compared locally in browser memory. The website can still make network requests for normal site services and optional billing.

Which Excel formats does WorkbookDiff accept?

The comparison input is unencrypted .xlsx only, up to 20 MB per file. XLS, XLSM, XLSB, CSV and ODS are not supported comparison inputs.
