JSON to Excel

Convert JSON to Excel to review structured records in a familiar worksheet. Paste a JSON array of objects or upload a .json file, and download a new XLSX workbook with one Data sheet. The header is the union of keys across all records, not just the first object, so optional fields discovered later are not discarded. JSON is parsed and the workbook is generated in your browser, with no server upload.

This is useful for API response samples, exported configuration lists, and small application datasets that need a manual review. An object containing exactly one array property is also accepted, even if it contains other non-array metadata. The records in that array must be objects. Nested objects and arrays stay together as JSON strings in individual cells rather than being flattened into an unpredictable set of columns. Numbers and booleans remain typed values; missing properties and null values become blank cells.

Ready. Input stays in your browser. Limit: 20 MB per file or pasted input.

How to convert JSON to Excel

  1. Paste valid JSON or choose a UTF-8 .json file up to 20 MB.
  2. Use an array of objects, or an object with exactly one array property containing objects.
  3. Select Convert to XLSX. Keys are collected in first-seen order across the records.
  4. Download converted.xlsx and inspect the Data worksheet before sharing or importing it.

Example input and output

JSON input:
[{"name":"Pencil","quantity":12},{"name":"Pen","tags":["blue"]}]

Worksheet output:
name | quantity | tags
Pencil | 12 | (blank)
Pen | (blank) | ["blue"]

Data rules and limits

Column order follows the first occurrence of each key. For a wrapper such as {"items":[{"id":1}],"total":1}, only items becomes worksheet data; total is not exported. An empty array or objects with no keys cannot create a useful worksheet and are rejected by the page. Arrays of primitives, multiple array properties, invalid JSON, and line-delimited JSON are not accepted.

Inputs are limited to 20 MB each, matching WorkbookDiff’s file-validation limit. Large files can expand substantially in memory; use smaller inputs if your browser slows down. Excel output must fit worksheet row and column limits. Formatting, formulas, and charts may not be preserved: these tools write values, not a full-fidelity workbook copy.

Need to verify versions instead? Compare two Excel files. For a documented review, see the one-time audit handoff report; conversion, merging, and splitting do not generate an audit report.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a nested JSON response?

Yes, if the top level is an array of objects or an object with exactly one array property. Nested objects and arrays inside each record are stringified into cells; the converter does not recursively flatten them.

What if objects have different keys?

All keys across all records are included in first-seen order. A missing property or null value becomes a blank cell, so later records can introduce columns without losing earlier values.

Will text beginning with an equals sign become a formula?

No. JSON strings are written as text values, not formula objects. The output is a new values-only XLSX workbook; it does not reconstruct formatting, formulas, or charts from another workbook.

What are the size and privacy limits?

JSON files and pasted UTF-8 input are limited to 20 MB. Excel worksheet limits also apply, and large or deeply nested data may exhaust browser memory. JSON is processed in browser memory without a server upload.
