Which Excel files can I convert?
Only .xlsx workbooks are accepted, with a 20 MB limit per file. Legacy .xls, .xlsm, password-protected files, and CSV are not supported on this page. Use the separate CSV to JSON tool for CSV input.

An Excel to JSON converter should make the shape of your data predictable, not just change the file extension. Turn a worksheet from an XLSX workbook into an array of JSON objects, with the first row supplying the property names. Choose the worksheet you actually need instead of accidentally exporting a cover sheet. The conversion runs in your browser; workbook bytes are not uploaded to a server.
Use the result to prepare a small API fixture, move a product list into an application, or inspect a spreadsheet as structured records. Keep strings when account codes, postal codes, or leading-zero identifiers must stay text. Type inference is an explicit choice: it converts numeric text and true/false text, but does not guess dates. This is a values-only export, not a workbook backup. Excel display formats are not carried into JSON, so a numeric cell displayed as 00123 can become 123 even in string mode.
Ready. Input stays in your browser. Limit: 20 MB per file or pasted input.
Worksheet rows:
name | quantity | active
Pencil | 12 | true
JSON with inference:
[
{"name": "Pencil", "quantity": 12, "active": true}
]Blank headers become column_1, column_2, and so on. Duplicate names get _2, _3 suffixes, with collisions checked against earlier columns. Missing cells become empty strings, including in inference mode. Blank rows inside the used range remain records. If a later row is wider than the header, extra columns receive generated names.
Inputs are limited to 20 MB each, matching WorkbookDiff’s file-validation limit. Large files can expand substantially in memory; use smaller inputs if your browser slows down. Excel output must fit worksheet row and column limits. Formatting, formulas, and charts may not be preserved: these tools write values, not a full-fidelity workbook copy.
Need to verify versions instead? Compare two Excel files. For a documented review, see the one-time audit handoff report; conversion, merging, and splitting do not generate an audit report.

Formulas use their cached results when available; formulas are not recalculated. A missing cached result becomes an empty string. Date cells become ISO strings. Formatting, formulas, and charts are not preserved in the JSON output.
Headers are trimmed. Blank headers receive column_N names, and repeated names receive numeric suffixes until each key is unique. The first row is not exported as a data record.
The converter reads workbook bytes in browser memory and produces a local download. It does not upload your workbook. Normal site requests may still occur; this is not a claim of zero network traffic.
